Smiley to Miley to What?
If someone were to tell Billy Ray Cyrus to “shake his money maker” a decade ago, he’d have twitched his hips a bit in an Elvis Presley fashion, but today, he’d grab his daughter and shake her until the money fell out.
Miley Cyrus is starting to bear little resemblance to that nick name her father gave her. Smiley Cyrus has become Miley. No longer smiley but sultry, at times a bit slutty and perhaps a bit too sexy for the legion of fans she acquired as television tween queen “Hannah Montana.”
Again, I’m not the moral arbiter here and I’d hate to stand in the way of a profit driven entity- BUT. This smacks of the fraud perpetrated on the public when Britney Spears decided to become a tramp in front of the little girls who followed her like the Pied Piper. We all see what happened to this charming young lady- is Miley next?
Her awakening sexuality turned into a profit center for all those who make a living from her? Let’s examine this situation and try to do so without me sounding like the judgmental Marion the Librarian “Sextrology” calls some women of my sign.
In all this making money, hand over fist, is there not the moral imperative to preserve this child and, yes, she still is a child, and the children she seduced in the smash TV hit conceptualized by her father? The answer to this is yes.
This goes to the rapid sexualization of our young women. I believe it’s an actual campaign. What could possibly be at its root? What is at the root of most evil? The love of Money.
As soon as 9 year olds start relentlessly demanding ear piercings, make-up, high lights and fake nails, they become a hard-charging consumer base. So hard charging we have made up a name for their expenditure bracket- TWEENS.
Once there was a label- every single company with wares to hawk targeted them. Little kids have money now and it’s time to get it spent. Hollywood is the promotional vehicle for all of this. They are in charge of making certain the little kids think it’s necessary to look, act and behave like adults.
For example- and I didn’t see it- but someone posted on YouTube.com a video of a bunch of 7 year olds in thigh high boots, etc., lip syncing to Beyonce. Why? Furthermore, who thought this was “cute” or even remotely appealing. I’m actually concerned about anyone who did find it acceptable or appealing- they have a word for people who enjoy watching young girls dressed up and paraded around looking like adult women …
What parents did a good job in my opinion? Hilary Duff’s parents did a decent job for quite some time. The Olsen twins had it together for a good long time- actually until they became “adults.”
What parents did a truly shitty job? Those of Jon Benet Ramsey, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears … the list is endless of those seduced and ravaged by Hollywood. Saddest is when the parents are willing to allow it. Using your children as money makers is criminal.
If your child evidences some interest in or talent for an aspect of the entertainment industry and you feel they are capable, under your direction and guidance, to handle the pitfalls that go hand in hand with it- sample the waters. However, when your child starts to lose touch with reality- or starts to believe they run the show and no longer account to you- it’s time to pull the plug. Can anyone resist the allure of Hollywood? It seems few.
However- the parents of the children who are fans of Miley Cyrus do have a choice whether they are going to let their little darlings transition, with Miley, into adulthood. If your child is 17- totally fine, in theory, to see her looking 25. If your child is 10- watching her strip down and gyrate on stage might not be where you want to be right now.
Why are we in such a huge hurry to turn our little girls into women?
